Sometimes considered no more than a variety of C. alpina var.columbiana but normally no more than 10cm tall, increasing by stolons and underground runners, and forming a loose mat of parsley-like leaflets. Flowers small and pulsatilla-like, generally purple-pink, though a white form is recorded.
Native to N.W . America, Rocky Mts., growing in limestone barrens at alpine levels. Flowering March-April in cultivation.
