Wide upright, fast growing. Dark red with darker center, late May. Dark green slightly reflexed foliage with lighter undersides. A popular plant in New England landscapes and long considered to be the best red available. For best results, feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom and keep the roots cool with a thick layer of mulch. Keep the soil pH between 4.5 and 5.5 for best results.

Nova Zembla rhododendron develops a stout trunk with thick stems. The bark becomes attractive with scale with age. The blooms are large, sometimes up to 5 inches wide. Flowers late May to June.
